Part of our national heritage

Most people don't know it, but the Australia played a large role in the history of the terrarium, and the terrarium has played an equally large role in the history of Australia.

English botanist Nathan Ward accidentally invented the terrarium when he forgot to clean out one his bug collecting jars. A fern spore that had somehow found its way inside the jar germinated, and from this humble beginning the terrarium (and the whole craze for growing terrarium plants indoors) got its start.

If you visit certain rural areas of Tasmania today, you will notice they are eerily similar to places like Somerset and Yorkshire in England. This is due to a combination of the architectural styles and the many English trees that were transported to the colony in terrariums so homesick Englishmen would feel better.

Although this was also done in other states, including Victoria and NSW, it was far more successful in Tasmania (and some would argue it was a bit too successful) because of the similarity in climate between Tasmania and England.

It also worked the other way, with Australian plants being transported to England in terrariums, which is how the koalas in the London zoo today are able to be provided with their natural diet.

Benefits of terrarium plants

Terrariums are wonderful because they enhance any room they're installed in. They are easy to care for and maintain, needing nowhere near as many waterings or soil changes as ordinary indoor plants. Looking at a terrarium can also help elevate your mood. Looking at plants makes people feel better.

So, as you  can see, there are many reasons to consider getting a terrarium. Why not try it for yourself and see what a difference it makes in your life? It is easy, rewarding, and may even add value to your property if it is part of a permanent installation.

How to start your own terrarium plants

The most difficult part of installing a terrarium is the planning. Once you've decided what it is you want, the rest is very simple.

Obviously you'll need to choose from the various terrarium plants for sale, but you also need to think about the size and shape of the terrarium itself, any accessories that will be needed for your chosen plants, and decorative items such as stones and secondary plants you'd like to include.

You can buy ready-made terrariums or design your own custom terrarium to get a really individual style. Anything goes, really, and you can be as creative as you want.
